Jim Perdue was appointed by Bishop Bob Hoshibata of the Desert Southwest Conference to be the pastor in charge at San Pedro Valley United Methodist Church, Benson, AZ, effective July 1, 2018.

Jim comes to our church having recently retired as a missionary for Global Ministries of The United Methodist Church. While there, he built networks of agencies within Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Mexico supporting the rights and caring for the needs of those forced to migrate out of those areas seeking safe refuge for themselves and their children. His primary focuses were on identifying and addressing the root causes of this migration, and exploring ways The United Methodist Church can be more effective in its mission with those migrants at various stages in the migration process.

Including pastoring churches and missionary work, Jim has served almost 50 years.

His focuses as a local church pastor include building core teams of people called to God’s mission within their local communities; helping them then clarify a vision for the church’s future, develop a strategic action plan to help them reach for that vision, and develop the skills they need to do that.

He is married to Neva Thorn. On June 30 they celebrated 51 years of marriage. They have 4 grown children, 13 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. The family is scattered over Kentucky, Iowa and Arizona. Jim and Neva live on the east side of Tucson with their youngest daughter, her daughter and her husband, and their daughter. (Yes, that’s 4 generations under one roof.)

Jim has a BA in philosophy from Morris Harvey College in Charleston, West Virginia and a Master of Divinity degree magna cum laude from Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. He is a founding member of the United Methodist Church’s Academy for Spiritual Formation. He is an ordained elder in The United Methodist Church and a full clergy member of the Iowa Conference.

Jim’s hobbies include music listening (Jazz, tango, old country blues and bluegrass, and blues), painting (oils – landscapes and animals), and watching BritBox and romantic comedy movies (chick flicks) at home.

You can reach Jim by email (revjimperdue@yahoo.com), Facebook (Gauchojim Perdue), or cell phone (480) 392-1672. Contact him if you need pastoral attention, are interested in joining the church or becoming a Christian, ready to get involved in active mission with the Benson community, or just needing a friend to listen.

You can call him Rev. Jim, Pastor Jim, or Jim, as you are more comfortable.
