This is a marvelous mission opportunity that runs all year long, as church members and friends purchase backpacks for children in our local school district whose families cannot afford to purchase them. On Backpack Sunday each July, all the backpacks are placed in the sanctuary for the Sunday morning service, where we dedicate them in love. Later, they are distributed to local school staffs and faculty members who know which students need them.
Buck Sunday Offering
We receive a Buck Sunday (from “The buck stops here”) offering on the second Sunday of each month. Each month’s offering goes to a different local community-based mission and outreach project.
It has been a long-standing tradition of Methodists and now United Methodists to leave alms, or a special offering over and above our regular tithe or giving, as we come forward to share in the Lord’s Supper. We leave a gift as an expression of generosity in response to the overwhelming love God has shown to us out of the goodness of his heart. The alms are left in a basket at the front of the sanctuary when we come forward to commune. They then are placed in a special fund for emergency needs throughout the Benson community. There is no set amount to give. We give as the Lord lays it upon our hearts. No gift is too small or large, if it is given in generosity and in response to God’s overwhelming love.
